Can Acne Diets Help?

There has been much debate on whether certain diets or foods can cause acne............

Bottom line: Foods don't cause acne. But they can aggravate symptoms in those already suffering from this condition

There are studies suggesting that some foods may be a problem for those who are prone to breakouts.

Foods That May Acne Flare-ups

It has been speculated that people who are prone to breakouts tend to eat a highly acidic diet - which may upset the body’s pH level causing breakouts and inflammation.

So what are acidic foods?

  • Animal protein – like beef, pork, chicken..
  • Sweeteners – like sugar and corn syrup
  • Processed foods – like chips, cakes, pies, crackers,etc.

Healthy Diet Suggestions

While there is no gurantee that eating certain foods will cure your acne, it's worth trying to see what results you, it's generally a healthier diet to follow for anyone.

The idea is simple - maintain a balanced pH level - which means at least half of your daily food intake should include raw vegetables or fruits............include:

  • Vegetables like - lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots, and beets
  • Fruits – like lemons, grapes, apples, pineapples, strawberries, peaches and raisins

When people think of lemons and pineapples they are a little surprised – while these fruits may taste acidic - They are actually very alkaline.

Homemade and Over-The-Counter Solutions

One simple treatment is to make a scrub from an equal mixture of sugar and baking soda.

  • pour equal amounts of granulated sugar and baking soda into the palm of your hand
  • add a little water to make a paste and gently, gently, massage your face for a minute or two and rinse well.

This granulated scrub will help to unclog pores and eliminate excess oils and feels great. You can also add lemon juice or tomato juice to this mixture for more severe acne treatment.

Another treatments includes using an apple cider vinegar wash.

  • pour a small amount of apple cider vinegar onto a wash cloth or cotton ball 
  • rub well all over the face. This may sting a bit at first, but it will help dry up your acne pimples pretty fast.

More Potent Over-The-Counter Suggestion

Try a topical salicylic acid acne serum or lotion to kill bacteria and help heal damaged skin.

The home remedies above can help dry pimples but won't address the underlying causes of acne bacteria and prevent and control scarring.
