Natural and Surgical Solutions for Bags Under The Eyes

How To Fix Swollen Eyes

how to fix bags under eyes Bags Under The Eyes! Don’t You Hate Them?

Well if you want some great homemade tips on how to fix puffy eyes - and cosmetic surgery options - keep reading............

It’s amazing how different someone looks -- no matter how beautiful they are -- when they have bags, dark circles, or puffy swollen eyes.

And this problem can affect young and old alike. I know first hand as I have suffered from puffy eyes since high school........so it's not just an age issue.

Besides making us look old and tired, puffy, swollen eyes could also be an indication of a variety of health issues.

What Causes Bags Under Eyes

One common reason is fluid retention. The fluid collects around the eye socket (orbits) causing the thin loose skin above and below the eye bulge out.

This puffy look also gives the appearance of dark circles – when it's usually just the shadow cast by the bulge. Usually these eye bags are worse in the morning and dissipate a bit as the day goes on.

Other causes of puffy eyes are:

Eye disorders - Including blephartits, chronic blephartits, and conjunctivitis can also cause puffy eyes. The use of certain medications such as those containing cortisone is also another factor.

Eye Infection - Or injury can cause bags under the eyes. I had a very serious eye infection when I was 6 years old. Now if I miss a few hours sleep, eat too much salt, or have an extra glass of wine - it is noticeably puffy the next day.

After meeting with several plastic surgeons, I was told there is not much that can be done as this is simple fluid collection.

So, after years of stretching and contracting - I'm dealing with loose skin and puffy eyes. This makes finding a product to improve the look of the eyes a challenge.

Medical Conditions/Medications - Allergies, thyroid disorders, heart disease, kidney disorders, hormonal imbalances are possible causes for fluid retention and therefore can cause serious bags under eyes.

Lack of Sleep - Bags under the eyes and lack of sleep......not much can be said here except -- get some sleep!

Alcohol and Tobacco - Obviously, if this the cause for bags under eyes……………..there is not much to say except – Quit.

A Must Have Solution For Bags Under The Eyes

Before you try the following "typical" recommendations that you read about everywhere - try these tips first:

  • Eye Drops - When you're eyes are cloudy or red, you'll look even more tired. Place a drop or two of Visine to get the red out.
  • Bright Concealer - Put a tiny dot of a bright (not white) concealer on the inner corner of each eye and on the very top middle of the upper eye lid...as close to the lash line as possible. This will make the eyes appear wide and draw the focal point to the top of your eyes and away from the puffiness below.
  • No Eyeliner - If you normally use an dark eyeliner - on the days the puffiness is really bad, only line the upper lids. Or apply a dark shadow to the upper lids only. This will not only make the eyes look wider and more awake, but will hide any puffiness you might have on the upper part of the eye.
  • Reduce Shine and Hydrate - The more shiny the skin around you eyes are, the more noticeable the bags are. But keeping the area hydrated makes wrinkles less noticeable. I use a creamy dermal filler. This product not only hydrates and fill-in fine lines, but adds light reflective particles with comfortable matte finish - so it sort of "hides the bags and other imperfections".
  • Reduce Inflammation - Try an anti-inflammatory lipopeptide gel at night and/or in the morning to help decongest and reduce puffiness. Combine this with a massage by applying the fluid reducing eye serum above and under the eyes - and around the orbital bone.

Lightly massage by tapping your fingers around the whole eye area...starting from the outer corner of your eye - moving in toward the inner corner and then around the upper lid and back to the outer corner.

Do this several times in a fast light motion - making little circles all around the eye. This will help reduce the fluid build-up, dark circles, and increase circulation and blood flow.

Bags Under The Eyes - What Else Can You Do?

  • Cold Compress – Place a cold wash cloth on your eyes, or even cold spoons. They fit perfectly around the eyes and really help reduce puffiness. Another great choice is an eye mask. They have silicon like gel inside and are kept either in the freezer or refrigerator. Keep a teaspoon or an eye mask in the refrigerator so it’s always ready.
  • Sliced cucumbers - Keep a few slices in a zip lock bag and keep them in the freezer. In the morning, just pull a few slices out when you need them. This feels Wonderful.
  • Cold tea bags - While it's a bit messy it does work because the caffeine helps constrict the blood vessels and the tea acts as a mild astringent. The problem is it can dry skin a little too much. If you're over 35 yrs old, this may be too drying.
  • Reduce salt - This is hard for salt lovers! Try to balance it out with increased potassium. Either take a mineral supplement that has potassium in it or try to eat potassium rich foods like bananas, apricots, avocados, cantaloupe.
  • Elevate your head slightly when sleeping - Many people have puffy eyes when they first wake-up. Lying in a horizontal position for a few hours can cause fluid build-up around the eyes, but this usually goes away once the person is up and around for a while.

  • What If It’s Hereditary?

If you’ve had bags under the eyes all your life and your family members have them too, it could be hereditary --and as you age, it becomes more prominent.

You can try following the examples listed above in the fluid retention section – this can help a little bit. But if the problem is due to excess fatty tissue, only surgery can help.

There is an improved eye-lift procedure that is less invasive and reduces the chances of scaring and bruising - it's called Transconjunctival Lower Blepharoplasty. This is for the lower lid only. Here is how it works:

    • An incision is made on the inside of the lower lid
    • The excess fat is removed
    • The incision is then closed with sutures that are self-dissolving

This procedure is completed in a few hours and there is not much pain except for a tight sensation around the eye area. Most people are able to go back to work in a few days – but you still have to be careful and avoid strenuous activity, too much reading, wearing contacts…..

The idea candidate is someone in good physical condition i.e. no known ophthalmic conditions, high blood pressure, heart disease, hypothyroidism or any other thyroid condition.

    Finding a Doctor
