Benfotiamine Dosage
by Karen
Can you tell me about Benfotiamine? What is it for and what is the dosage? My sister told me that Dr. Perricone recommends for anti-aging and for good skin. Is there any truth to that?
Hello Karen,
Yes, Benfotiamine is an excellent anti-aging supplement. What it does is help reduce glycation which speeds up the aging process not only for the skin, but for the whole body. Glycation is sort of a chemical reaction that happens when there is too much sugar in the body.
Glycation affects collagen fibers and causes cross-linking of collagen molecules. What this means to you - in terms of your skin - is that it losses elasticity.
Benfotiamine is similar to thiamine (vitamin B1) and helps convert carbohydrates and fats into glucose. A study in the European Journal of Pharmacology suggests that Benfotiamine might help reduce neuropathic pain and inflammation. So this might be a helpful supplement for diabetics too.
Dr. Perricone is a huge fan of this supplement, but he still recommends that you watch your intake of sugary foods and foods high in simple carbohydrates - like crackers, bread, cakes, white rice and pasta.
The recommended dosage for Benfotiamine is 100-250 milligrams daily. But before taking any supplement, make sure to check with your doctor if you have any health problems or you're taking any medication.
