bruises and spots on skin

by Junaid
(sadiqabad,pakistan)

When I was around 11 years old, my friend hit me left upper arm slightly. For some time I felt sever pain and after some days a big bruise appeared. It's a large dark brown spot with small grains on it.

Now I'm 19 years old and that area is still dark, but it no longer hurts. Please tell me about a safe way to improve my skin.

Thanks,
Junaid

Hi Junaid,

Thank you for your question and for sending the picture. Unfortunately, I'm not sure why that bruise didn't go away. If the bruise was painful as you stated, you probably should have seen a doctor.

Bruises happen when tiny capillaries under the skin break and a small amount of blood leaks out causing the skin to change color.

Some people bruise more easily than others for a variety of reasons. The most common ones are due to the use of certain medications like blood thinners and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

From what I understand, when a bruise becomes large, hard, tender, or painful it should be looked at by a physician.

There are several complications that can happen with a bruise such as calcium deposits in the bruise area called myositis ossificans.

This can be confirmed by an X-ray. If this is the case, you may need to have a surgical procedure to have this removed if the problem is not resolved in a few months.

In your case, since this lasted for years, I would definitely suggest you see a doctor to find out why it has not gone away.

Hope this helps,
Linda
