Melasma Treatments

Are you searching for safe Melasma Treatments? Well, you're not alone. Melasma, a common skin disorder that manifests itself in large dark discolorations on the skin, can be relieved by any number of Melasma treatments that are currently available.

Affecting mainly women with darker skin such as Hispanics, Africans, Arabs and Asians, Melasma is often a side effect of hormone supplements such as birth control pills or HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) as well as pregnancy.

Exposure to sun can further aggravate the condition and make Melasma removal all the more difficult. Fortunately, there is a wide variety of treatments for Melasma ranging from creams with natural ingredients to laser removal.

Natural Treatment For Melasma

Some of the topical cream treatments for Melasma contain hydroquinone, a skin-lightening agent, though it was banned in some European countries due to its link to cancer. A safer alternative are creams containing Arbutin, which is a natural plant-based ingredient.

Some studies suggest that the ingredient Arbutin along with grape seed extract and vitamins C and E have been known to reduce the level of melanin in the skin. Other natural cream ingredients are tretinoin, alpha-hydroxy acids and kojic acid, to name a few.

One worthy of note is Dermology Skin Brightener Cream, which contains Arbutin as well as Shea Butter and Vitamins A, C and E. Their products can be ordered directly from their website at: Dermaology Skin Brightener Cream.

Other Melasma Removal Techniques

If a topical cream treatment does not cause a noticeable change in the Melasma, other possible Melasma treatments are microdermabrasion and chemical peel treatments. Both of these increase cell production turnover via the application of fine crystals to the skin under pressure with a tiny suction tip.

Newer systems now use tiny diamond chips instead of crystals and are also able to infuse therapeutic treatments at the same time as the microdermabrasion. These help to clean out the pores, allowing the microdermabrasion to work more effectively.

Chemical peels are another Melasma removal treatment and there are several types. Glycolic peels are the most commonly used and are done in skin care salons or in a physician’s office. Sometimes they can form a blister if too strong a concentration is used but scarring is relatively rare.

Beta-hydroxy acid peels are not quite as strong but can sometimes create blotching if not applied evenly. Many dermatologists prefer to use TCA peels in conjunction with prescription creams. TCA is related to vinegar and TCA peels are especially effective on severe Melasma. They are most commonly done in a dermatologist’s office with no anesthesia.

For Melasma that does not respond to any of the usual treatments, laser treatment is sometimes utilized. These should only be done at an expert laser center because some lasers can actually worsen a Melasma condition.

Melasma treatments with a fractional laser known as a “Fraxel” system have been approved by the FDA and provides a deeper, more effective treatment without burning or downtime. The laser treatments are expensive, costing around $1,000 and up with 3 to 4 treatments recommended over 3-6 months.

It cannot be stressed enough that since Melasma is directly caused by exposure to sunlight, anyone with Melasma and especially those who are using any of the above treatments should wear a sunscreen of no less than 30 SPF at all times. Your reward will be a clearer, brighter complexion.
