How to Treat Dry Skin

This condition is not only unsightly, but can be painful at times…especially during the cold, dry winter months. So how do you treat dry skin?

First of all…………

    Stop Using Soap –

  • Using plain soap can dry out any complexion. Try to stick with cleansers that are pH balanced. This means that your facial cleanser cream and your body wash should have a pH that measures around 7 which is neutral.

The pH measures the how acidic or alkaline your cleanser is. Normal healthy skin is usually in the range of 4.2 to 5.6 and a good facial cleanser cream should also be within this range. At this level, the acid mantle (top layer of the dermis) is in good condition and is able to protect from dehydration and other damaging elements of the environment like wind, sun or bacteria. A pH below 7 is considered more acidic and above 7 is more alkaline.

  • Stop Using Hot Water –

  • The American Academy of Dermatology strongly suggests to stop using hot water as it can remove what little oil is left on the surface. Warm or cool water is best -- although as we all know it’s not as relaxing as a steaming hot shower or bath!!

  • Lubricate Before Shaving –

  • Shaving the face or legs without lubrication will irritate it more. It’s good practice to apply a small amount of shaving cream, moisturizer, or even hair conditioner before shaving to protect moisture loss.

  • Limit Water Exposure –

  • Don't wash so often. For example, many people over-wash their face. Once it's been cleaned for the evening, there is no need to wash again in the morning.

  • Moisturizer Immediately After Bath/Wash –

  • Applying a water trapping ointment right after washing helps to keep it hydrated by trapping in the moisture. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a botanical homeopathic moisturizer that offers a unique trans derma deliver system so it can penetrate and hydrate more deeply that typical moisturizers
