Pictures of Skin Cancer

Pictures of skin cancer aren’t pretty to look at but do you know the skin cancer warning signs? Skin cancer pictures remind us blatantly of just how sensitive our skin really is, and the damage that can result from too much UV light.

Having said that, a skin cancer photo can become a great teaching tool and help us recognize the early signs of skin cancer. Reviewing skin cancer pictures can help people identify potential problems in their own skin for early detection and treatment.

This article shows several skin cancer pictures. Overall there are some commonalities and basic five signs of skin cancer including lumps, spots, or moles, sore spots that don’t heal well, and suspicious growths or scaly skin patches.

Squamous Cell Skin Cancer Pictures

If you find something like what you see here on your body, it’s very important to get it checked as soon as possible. Don’t ignore any potential skin cancer warning signs – if it looks suspicious, get it checked out. As the skin cancer foundation would say “Better safe than sorry.”

This first skin cancer photo shows cell Carcinoma. Like many types of skin cancer, this begins as a small red bump. This may bleed, and often appears in the areas of one’s ears, lips, nose and forehead (all the places that get a lot of sunlight). Overall this is the most common type of cancer, accounting for 80 percent of head and neck cancers.

Skin Cancer Photo Melanoma

The second skin cancer photo illustrates malignant Melanoma. While a far more rare type of skin cancer, this is very dangers and aggressive. Individuals with a family history of melanoma are at greater risk off contracting this cancer, as are people with long-term exposure to sunlight without proper protection.
Similar to Carcinomas, Melanomas are more common on the upper body, but they can appear anywhere. Some of the warning signs of skin cancer when you look at this image is an irregular edge to the lesion, odd coloring (different than connective skin), and if the spot is 6mm or greater (and growing). One note: some melanoma may present smaller than 6mm.

Kaposi's Sarcoma - Skin Cancer Photo

This last skin cancer photo is called Kaposi’s Sarcoma. These symptoms of skin cancer involved small patches on the skin that may be brown, pink or purple like a bruise. This generally starts in one spot on the body, then it can spread anywhere. As with Melanoma this cancer is aggressive and often requires radiation therapy. With these skin cancer pictures in mind, doctors recommend that individuals should do routine self-checks seeking out any sign of changes. People with fair skin, light eyes, those with family histories of skin cancer, and those who have spent a lot of time in sunlight without protection have the highest risk, and should be doubly diligent. If any questionable skin patch appears, consult your doctor.

What Causes Skin Cancer - Protect Yourself

While nobody all the facts of what causes skin cancer, we do know that too much UVA and UVB exposure is big factors. So be proactive. Besides doing regular self-checks, watch how much UV light you get regularly and use an effective broad spectrum sunscreen with added antioxidants for even more protection.
Note that over 80% of commercially available sun screens currently on the market have ingredients that (a) may not provide the protection needed, or (b) may actually do more harm than good. These are the ingredients of which to be wary:
  • benzophenone-3
  • 4-MBC (4-methyl-benzylidene camphor)
  • PABA
  • octyl-methoxycinnamate (OMC)
  • homosalate
