I have friends who have had Restylane treatments either to plump up thin lips or getting rid of marionette lines…....

You know those parentheses surrounding your mouth and their results were incredible. They looked 10 years younger!

The only problem is the cost of Restylane can be expensive to keep up. Did you know that just one treatment can cost as much as $700.00? And this is just for one area.

If you’re looking for information and have questions such as: what is a typical restylane procedure, how long does it last, what are typical Restylane prices, side effects, complications.

Or just wish to see before and after photos; then you’ve come to the right place. Continue reading below for complete Restylane reviews.

What Is A Restylane?

A Restylane treatment involves injecting a dermal filler (wrinkle/line filler) made of hyaluronic acid to help plump up and add volume to the skin.

This dermal filler is injected into the skin layers causing an increase in tissue volume – sort of like adding air to partially deflated balloon. This also helps to lift up the tissues of the face -- filling in deep folds, lines, and wrinkles as well as improving the overall contour of the face.

There are many types of fillers on the market -- some of which are used to fill in extremely deep tissue folds for those suffering from facial lipoatrophy – which is a severe loss of facial fat. However, Restylane or Juvedérm injections are the most common used to fill in fine lines and wrinkles due to aging.

Years ago collagen was the most popular wrinkle filler however, the newer filler agents now contain hyaluronic acid, which is safer, does not require a skin test, and has less chance of causing allergic reaction.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar like material that works by holding moisture in your cells thereby plumbing-up the skin. Young skin naturally has an abundance of Hyaluronic acid.

This is what surrounds collagen and gives young skin that plump full look. In fact, studies show that by the we reach 50 years of age, we only have half the hyaluronic acid than we did in our twenties.

How Wrinkle Fillers Work - see this informative video on rRestylane procedures and see before and after photos.

Here is a List of The Most Popular Wrinkle Fillers:

  • Restylane® - Restylane treatment is used more for fine facial wrinkles and lip augmentation. The effects can last up to six months depending on the area injected and is considered pretty safe with a low risk of side effects.
  • Juvedérm® - For those individuals who may be allergic to hyaluronic acid produced from bovine or avian tissue -- Juvéderm® is a non-animal form and free of allergens. This is also used mostly for wrinkles and lip augmentation.
  • Perlane - Perlane is also used to eliminate deeper lines and wrinkles, but is an excellent choice for lip augmentation…helping to create fuller more sensual lips.
  • Radiesse™ - This cosmetic filler contains microspheres mostly comprised of calcium and phosphate ions – which are naturally found in the body. After injection, the microspheres fill-in wrinkles and create a semi-permanent support structure for the skin. The results are long lasting --- up to two years – even more with regular touch-ups.
  • Sculptra® - This filler contains Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) and is a great skin lifting option. Unlike the other fillers, this one stimulates the formation of new collage and increases skin volume, all the while filling in wrinkles. This cosmetic filler has been called “a liquid face lift.” Sculptra is also used for people suffering from facial lipoatrophy – which is the loss of facial fat.

Restylane Treatment and Procedure

In a typical Restylane treatment only takes 20-30 minutes since there is no pre-test needed as was the case with collagen injections, due to allergic reactions. First the doctor determines the areas to be injected and how much you will need.

Then for your added comfort, an anesthetic (numbing) cream or an anesthetic block (sometimes called a dental block to numb the mouth area).....making the injections much less painful.

I know of one dermatologist who places a blue plastic tape over the cream to enhance it's effectiveness and it works extremely well for reducing the pain of the injections.

Once you’re finished, you will be required to apply a cool compress to the area for about an hour or so to reduce swelling and redness. That’s it. Most people can go back to work right after having a Restylane procedure.

How Long Does Restylane Last?

Depending the person, the area injected, and how much was used, one Restylane treatment can last 3- 6 months. Certain areas need treatments more frequently do to excessive movements, like Restylane for lips. Many people have noticed that a lip filler won’t last as long as treatments done in other areas of the face.

Cost Of Restylane

Restylane prices will vary greatly depending on upon where you live, your doctor fees, how much you need, and how many areas are injected. One Restylane injection cost anywhere from $300 to $700 per treatment area.

Side Effects Of Restylane – Complications

Restylane complications are pretty minor. Of course the side effects will vary from person to person, but the most common reactions after treatment include redness, pain, swelling, and bumps. Often times, you can feel the bumps, but the outer layer of the skin is smooth, so nobody really notices this.

Also, when you get injections in the lips, sometimes the upper or bottom lip may appear to be slightly larger or out of proportion for a about 24 hours.

This usually normalizes in a day so .... so not to worry. However, if you suspect there is a problem, always consult your dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Better safe than sorry ;-)

For most people the side effects of Restylane are pretty mild and clear up in a few days. Most doctors suggest applying an ice pack on the effected sites for a few hours after a wrinkle filler injection.

Natural Wrinkle Fillers- Restylane Cream

Many people, including myself, have been on the lookout for a natural alternative Restylane cream or serum that can offer similar benefits to a Restylane treatment.

While we all know, nothing will be as dramatic as a dermal filler injection, some topical Restylane alternative serums that contain pure hyaluronic acid work pretty nicely for hydrating and smoothing the area.
