Squamous Cell Skin Cancer

Squamous cell skin cancer is one of the most common three types of skin cancer, the other two being malignant melanoma and basal cell carcinoma. Squamous cell cancer is more aggressive than basal skin cancer, spreading either through lymph nodes or more commonly attacking the fat layer just under the skin.

Skin Cancer and the Sun: Self Examination:

Skin cancer spots begin to develop in people who are often in the sunlight without proper protection. In the early stage of skin cancer the skin may look like it has a pimple or other injury, and thus might get overlooked. For example, Squamous cell skin cancer looks pretty much like a rough bump that may be pink or red (usually on the ears, hands, face or arms).

Nonetheless, if you’re someone who has on-going exposure to UV radiation/sunlight it’s very important to remain vigilant. Consistent self checks followed by a physician’s follow up on unusual skin developments is one of the best ways skin cancer prevention tips and ways to prevent skin cancer. All facts about skin cancer point to early detection for best results and treatment options.

How To Avoid Skin Cancer and Treatment Options

Specialists tell us that early treatment dramatically improves cure rates (nearly 95% of all squamous tumors removed early cure the situation). If that doesn’t work, radiation therapy may be necessary. Chemotherapy does not seem very effective with Squamous cell skin cancer.

Once the tumors or skin cancer spots are removed, it’s essential to have regular check ups. The skin in that area was already harmed by the sun, and recurrence can happen (usually within 48 months). If the cancer returns, alternative therapies may be recommended, such as micrographic surgery.

Skin Cancer and The Sun - Facts & Figures:

The most important facts about skin cancer to remember are as follows:

  • skin cancer is the most common type of cancer
  • non melanoma skin cancer victims total over 1 million a year
  • Squamous skin cancer has a very high cure rate if treated early
  • about 3,000 people a year die from non-melanoma skin cancers
  • avoiding tanning booths and sunbathing is one of the best ways to prevent skin cancer along with using a good, natural Chemical Free Sunscreen.

Current research has shown that many chemical sunscreens may be doing more harm than good. A study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that out of 785 sun screens analyzed -- a staggering 84% contained ingredients with safety concerns or did not provide adequate protection from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

In addition, research from University of California shows that there is some evidence that chemical sun screens might be dangerous and not protect against certain cancers like basal cell carcinoma or melanoma.

Research has identified the following chemicals as being harmful:

  • benzophenone-3
  • 4-MBC (4-methyl-benzylidene camphor)
  • PABA
  • octyl-methoxycinnamate (OMC)
  • homosalate
