The Best Facial Routine - Perfect Skin Tips

by Sonja

I have a fair complexion with combination skin. I'm 38 years old, but don't really have any wrinkles yet, but I do breakout once in a while on my forehead and chin.

What's the best advice or products would best for my skin to keep it looking good and prevent aging or breakouts.

I like natural products and would be grateful if you can recommend any. Should I start face exercises yet?

Thanks,
Sonja

Hello Sajni,

Thank you for your email regarding basic skin care tips. Except for the occasional breakouts on your forehead, lip, nose, and chin....it sounds like your complexion is pretty normal.

Do you exfoliate your skin? Either through scrubbing facials or with fruit acids (like alpha /beta hydroxy acids?).

Exfoliation is an important step in skin care especially after a certain age because the skin loses the ability to shed dead cells thoroughly and as often as it once did.

This leads to a number of problems such as clogged pores, breakouts, dull looking skin, uneven moisture balance (i.e. dry in some places and oily in others), and a reduced capacity to absorb moisturizers or other skin care products that you use.

Hydroxy acids serve two purpose - they help loosen what some people call the "glue" between dead cells making them easier to shed. Also, they can help minimize fine lines and bring more clarity to the skin.

So, if you don't already do this, I highly recommend you start exfoliating.

The other two steps of course is to wash and hydrate.

A lot of people get into trouble here because they use cleansers and moisturizers that are either too harsh or contain too many artificial ingredients and cheap oils.

These facial products can disrupts the skin’s pH balance and damages the acid mantel (the protective upper layer of the skin that is needed to keep it healthy).

There are so many products on the market and some have very good advertising campaigns - so it's easy to see why people get confused, use the wrong products and wind up causing more harm than good to their complexion.

It took me a long time to find the right combination of products, but I came across a very simple face cleanser and moisturizer that actually feels good to my skin. Not too drying, not too oily and my skin didn't have that strange tight feeling after I washed it. I think some cleanser strip the natural oils too much.

I highly recommend this skin care routine to most people with a normal to combination complexion.....What I like the most is these products are mostly organic and very clean. You can read more about it here. 3 steps - perfect skin tips.

As far as face exercises are concerned - I started doing mine when I was 39 years old and am glad I did - because it's harder to get dramatic results when you have serious sagging and wrinkles....not to say it's impossible to fix, but takes longer.

At that age, I didn't have too many concerns (my eyes were starting to get a bit puffy and I had some crow's feet starting, but nothing serious.) So I basically concentrated on the eye area, but was later told by the facial exercise instructor that this not a good idea. Do not spot train - she told me.

Because eventually all the areas of your face will be of concern to you and if you spot train you may over build one area and miss the purpose of facial exercising – to achieve an elegant balanced firm face well into your 60s, 70s and beyond.

I hope I’ve answered your questions. Please feel free to contact me if you have more.
Thanks,
