The Derma Roller - Does It Really Work? What's theTruth?

by curious
(new york)

Some say the dermaroller works, others say it does NOT,what's THE TRUTH here??

I am curious to know the truth {and of course if a salesperson or doctor pops on here, hahaha-sure you'll say "yes it definitely works"--pretty hilarious.}

So, naturally I'm aiming my question to those who are a normal customer, have bought the derma roller, and have actually tried it to see either good results, no results or horrible inflicting results some people claim after using this thing.
What's your story? Did it work for you?
----------------------------------------------

Hi,

Thanks for the great question….I’m hoping other readers who have tried the derma roller will share their opinion at this wrinkle free skin tips blog – as this is an open forum. I want to hear it all, the good and the bad!

I have and currently use the original FDA approved Scientia Derma Roller and love it. I think it works well, but slowly.

It’s been almost a year now that I’ve purchased my derma roller and that despite the fact that I’m getting older, my face (especially around the eye area) looks the same. I even love the way my face looks right after using the derma roller – it looks a little red at first which subsides in about an hour, but it looks plumped up for hours afterwards.

Besides I love the fact that even though I’m almost 50 years old and am able to build collagen – at an age where most of us hardly produce any collagen and are starting to lose what do have.

Ok, but enough about my opinion, let’s look at the science behind the derma roller and why/how it works. Here is a quote from a study done at the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Mercer University about the concept of skin needling and how the derma roller works to create collagen production:

Rolling the cylinder on the skin surface creates deeper micro-channels on the stratum corneum, through which any kind of substance we apply on the skin will gain access to even deeper and viable skin layers. On the same time, controlled, minuscule trauma is caused to the dermis, which reacts physiologically by producing collagen.

How do you think laser and chemical peels work? They create trauma to the skin and this naturally causes the skin to begin a healing process which builds collagen. Even a little cut on your finger is enough trauma to cause collagen production, If our bodies did not respond to skin trauma our cuts would never heal and close. So the derma roller just capitalizes on this concept.

What you have with the derma roller is a non-invasive (compared to laser/chemical peels), less risky, cheaper, and no downtime recovery, anti-aging - at home skin treatment.

So why some people say they don’t have a good response from the derma roller? I don’t know. It could be that they don’t use it often enough – it should be use at least once a week. Maybe they bought cheap ones - from e-Bay or other places in the internet - which have poor quality, not uniform sized needs.

There are lots of cheap imitations out there so you have to be careful where you buy it. I’ve even see some professional grade derma rollers available through the internet that should not be used at home. These should be used only by a professional as using them incorrectly can damage the skin. You should only use the one designed for home use.

And, finally, we live in a fast paced world and want everything done yesterday. The derma roller is not going to give immediate results like a chemical or laser peel. It’s a slow process as the skin starts to re-build collagen and repair the wrinkles. Maybe some people purchased the derma roller, used it a few times, didn’t see this miraculous difference in their skin and gave up.

If you want quick results see a plastic surgeon or dermatologist but be ready for the high cost and a long (at least 10 days) recovery time which means staying home and taking time off from work. And, even with plastic surgery, your results will begin to fade as your skin continues to age. With the derma roller, you can keep using it for the rest of your life without having to spend thousands of dollars per treatment.

I’m hoping to hear others chime with their Derma Roller experiences…Thanks,
Linda, Admin
