What Causes Skin Cancer
What causes skin cancer? The answer to that question is very important to anyone who wants to find ways to avoid skin cancer, especially those individuals at high risk of developing the disease.
People who have light skin, live in intense, sunny climates, who work outside or who have a family history of skin cancer generally are at more risk, and should take care to use the skin cancer prevention tips covered later in this article.
What is Skin Cancer?
We know what causes skin cancer, but do we understand what is skin cancer? Skin cancer begins from damaged DNA cells that the body could not repair. This damaged cell starts to grow and multiply uncontrollably.
Eventually, the dividing cells begin to form a tumor forming different types of skin cancer. Since skin cancer is on the outside of the body it is visible – which makes early signs of skin cancer easily detected.
Causes Of Skin Cancer & the Sun:
By far, UV exposure from sunlight is the main contributing factor to what causes skin cancer. Studies have shown that even getting one serious sunburn in your life elevates the chances of skin cancer by as much as 50%. Tanning booths used frequently also increase this possibility.
Why does this happen? UV light is actually a type of radiation. When UV rays damage the genetic foundation of skin cells, they can begin to grow in unhealthy ways. Additionally, the UV exposure can increase the amount of old-looking, dry, wrinkled skin on a person’s body.
Other Causes of Skin Cancer:
Besides UV rays, people that have impairments in their immune system can have serious reactions to sunlight. This happens either because of specific medications, or because of an overall breakdown in the body’s protective systems.
Two other potential causes for skin cancer are exposure to x-rays in high quantities, and/or physical contact with dangerous chemicals that react badly on the skin.
Finally some people have a genetic tendency toward skin cancer.
Causes Of Skin Cancer - Protection
Once we know what causes skin cancer, prevention becomes a matter of mindfulness – namely moderating our time in the sun and using a good quality Sunscreen.
Not all commercial sunscreens are created equal. Read labels carefully. Any product that contains benzophenone-3, 4-MBC (4-methyl-benzylidene camphor), PABA, octyl-methoxycinnamate (OMC) and/or homosalate should be avoided. These ingredients can be harmful, and not give you the level of protection they claim.
