What is Salicylic Acid

What is Salicylic Acid? It's a great anti-aging and acne skin aid because it's anti-microbial, which helps to keep bacteria and other impurities out and off of your skin – especially blackheads and whiteheads. It may also help to thicken your skin, and aid in collagen production among other benefits.

While it's found in many over-the-counter products – sometimes the strength (percentage) is not enough to a significant difference in your complexion. On the other hand, there are some products available on the internet that may be too strong, especially for mature or sensitive acne complexions.

Unlike alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) like retinol or fruit acids, this is water soluble, the beta hydroxyl acids (BHAs) fat soluble. As a result, a salicylic acid cream (or serum) penetrates deeper into the pores than alpha hydroxyl acids, and cleans them and helps to flush out the dirt and dead cells that cause the blackheads and pimples - it is very effective for an oily complexion too.

What salicylic acid does really well is help to open clogged pores and get rid of minor pimples, which is also why it is often found in dandruff shampoos, as well, since that is what causes the flaking and itching.

Many people like to perform an at home salicylic acid peel once a month or so to keep their complexion fresh and the pores clear. It also helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and discoloration too.

What Is Salicylic Acid - How it works

Salicylic acid works by helping the skin shed all the dead cells in the right way, so that the skin underneath can grow and flourish without all the dead stuff clogging up the works.

By exfoliating like this, you can cut down on the number of breakouts you get, and that is always a good thing. Using Salicylic acid at home, is affordable and can be easily worked into you routine.

Salicylic acid preparations are available as face cleansers, and toners. Some of the best on the market can be found in a serum/toner or as part of skin resurfacing kit.

However, what if you have bigger problems, like body acne? Well then you may want to consider something stronger like a body back acne combo which a package deal that has a spot treatment mask and body cleanser to reduce breakouts and blemishes on the neck, shoulders, chest, and back.

These type of kits are very powerful – as the dermis on the body is different and thicker – so do not use these on your face.

There are other ways to work salicylic acid into your beauty regimen, however. You can try dissolving a plain aspirin in water, and using cotton balls to pat it onto your face as a toner, after you wash your face.

Or try making a mask, using aspirin (salicylic acid) and kaolin clay. Use aloe Vera to help soothe the skin in the mix and wash your face well, afterward.
