Eczema and Food Allergies - Is There a Connection?
Which Foods Cause Eczema? Well, it's not quite proven that foods actually cause eczema. However, it is possible that diet related allergies can aggravate certain conditions.
By paying attention to your diet you may notice a connection between certain foods and the onset of eczema (exma)skin rash or itchy skin welts when scratched.
You see food allergies can bring on many symptoms, but the person already has eczema to begin with. Keeping a diet diary may help you discover which foods (if any) play a role in aggravating your symptoms.
The good news is most people find that once they eliminate the offending food and boost their immune system, the eczema symptoms improve immensely.
Foods That Flare Up Eczema
Eczema and Food Allergies
Food allergies include sensitivity to casein (milk/dairy) and gluten along with wheat, seafood, nuts, eggs, and soy. In addition to chemical food additives, preservatives and colorings -- all which can cause different reactions in different people. What makes it so difficult to pin point exactly which foods cause eczema is that eczema skin symptoms may not appear until 24-48 hours after eating.
Here is a breakdown of the most common four kinds of food intolerance.
They are all a form of atopic or contact dermatitis and are the two most common causes of eczema. Food allergies only aggravate it and cause symptoms and flare-ups.
Or continue reading below for more information......
Atopic Dermatitis - is often hereditary and usually occurs in people who are sensitive to allergens in the environment. This type of eczema is caused by a faulty immune system that produces inflammation and irritation. Building up the immune system would benefit this type of eczema greatly.
Contact Dermatitis - is the result of the something coming in contact with substances that irritate the dermis. This can include something as simple as your favorite feather pillows, mold, washing detergents, cosmetics, soaps, fragrances, shampoos, and more.
Finding the offending substance and eliminating it can help, but yes...........it's daunting to figure out what it could be. Again, keep a diary and try to eliminate some of the most common items listed above.
Start with the most commonly used product and stay away from it for at least a week – then reintroduce it and see if your eczema symptoms come back. Most often times, people find that their most favorite and commonly used soap or cosmetic is what caused the problem in the first place, so start there.
How To Treat Eczema Symptoms
Which foods cause eczema flare-ups will vary from person to person, try the elimination diet listed below. These are the most common allergic types and more than likely to cause some sort of reaction or flare-up.
Start with your favorite food first – Especially if it falls within the common food trigger list and try avoiding it for one week. Then re-introduce it again and see what happens.
Common foods to avoid are:
milk/dairy/eggs
peanuts
wheat
soy
seafood
Also consider avoiding the following additives and preservatives:
sodium metabisulphite
tartrazine
sodium benzoate
sodium glutamate
The last two additives are found in many foods, especially soups and prepared foods – so really watch for them!
Over The Counter Eczema Treatment
We all know how difficult it is to follow any diet, let alone having to track of which foods cause eczema. And while it is important that you try to reduce your consumption of the specific foods that cause eczema symptom, you need to take care of your damaged skin topically and allow it to heal.
Don't use regular soap, lotions, or moisturizers. It's important to use gentle, chemical free products specifically formulated for hypersensitive eczema conditions - like
eczema soap or moisturizers
These products are free from chemicals, herbicides, fertilizers, fragrances, and preservatives.
