Safest Sunscreen Reviews - Dangers of Sunscreen Follow-up

Since my newsletter report last month on the possible dangers of sunscreen, many of you have been asking a lot questions – specifically “which sunscreens are safe”? Therefore I think it’s important to dedicate a portion of this newsletter to the topic of safe sunscreen and provide you with more information.

The Environmental Working Group(EWG) is a non-profit group that works in the area of toxic chemicals and human health issues. They released - yet another study - last month that reported over 500 of the most popular sunscreen products found on our drug store shelf’s right now contain chemicals that may actually increase the rate at which malignant cells develop and spread.

And, what is worse – AOL News reported that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) knew about this potential problem for almost 10 years without reporting it to the public……..however, the FDA denies this allegation.

Here is a list of concerns researchers have with many popular sunscreens:

    • Some contain hormone-disrupting chemicals – like oxybenzone – which actually enters the bloodstream.
    • Some contain chemicals that may affect DNA causing cell damage, even cancer.
    • Some contain vitamin A derivatives which may increase cancer risks and tumors when the skin is exposed to the sun.
    • Many product have overstated or exaggerated claims about their performance and protection, especially about the SPF rating/protection.
    .

This last point is important, because people believe that a higher SPF rating means they can safely stay in the sun longer – which is not true. A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 isn’t twice as potent as one with an SPF of 15.

A sunscreen with an SPF of 15 will block out about 93% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays where as one with an SPF of 30 will only block about 97%. So you still need to cover-up or get out of the sun after a certain time.

Right now, until more is known, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) suggests that you choose a sunscreen with moderate SPF rating (not ones with super high ratings of 50 or 100), least amount of chemicals, and uses a physical UVA mineral blocker. The researchers at EWG have identified a handful of sun products that are considered safe and effective.

These top-rated products either contain titanium or zinc minerals - which physically blocks some UVA exposure - as opposed to using chemicals which are absorbed by the skin. And they contain the fewest toxic chemicals and hazardous ingredients.

The Heat Is ON – Cool Off with a Cucumber Facial

Cool off and reduce puffiness, reduce dark circles, reduce oiliness, and tighten your pores with a cooling, relaxing cucumber facial.

This facial is so simple to make and cheap as cucumbers are in season right now.

    • Peel one small (cold) cucumber and place in a food processor or blender and blend until liquefied.
    • Pour the mixture into a strainer over a bowl, so you can collect the liquid.
    • Now add one 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and one egg yolk to the cucumber liquid and mix well.
    • Apply this mixture all over your face (avoid the eye area if that area is very dry) and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Then rinse off and apply a moisturizer.

This is a great facial if you’re planning to go out for the evening. Apply this mixture before you shower. If the mixture gets warm, place it in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.

The colder it is – the better it works and feels. Leftovers can be stored in an air tight container for a 2 days.

Featured Product - Organic Vitamin C Crystal Serum

You probably already know the benefits of Vitamin C for skin health. The problem is – until now – it’s been difficult finding a Vitamin C cream or serum that didn’t contain oxidized, old, non-potent vitamin C.

You see once vitamin C is mixed into a liquid, it begins to lose its potency. So by the time you purchase a Vitamin C cream or serum, it’s been sitting (pre-mixed) in the warehouse and then the store shelves for months, maybe even years……Useless!

The Vitamin C serum I’m currently trying out contains 70% organic, fresh vitamin C crystals that comes in a separate tube. Once I'm ready to use it, I mix the dry Vitamin C crystals into a vitamin rich, hydrating liquid serum – shake well and then start using it.

This vitamin-rich serum infused with fresh organic vitamin C makes my skin look and feel super hydrated, firm, and.......................well “plump” is the best way I can describe it.

But the real test for me is to see it if lightens or gets rid of a big brown sun spot on my left cheek. You see one of the benefits of organic vitamin C is that it helps to even out your skin -tone variations and lighten your age spots and blemishes within a very short period of time.

So, I’ve take a before picture of the brown sun spot on my cheek, a middle picture, and soon will be taking an after picture.

In a few weeks, I’ll post my progress and my before and after pictures in the newsletter and at my Vitamin C for Healthy Skin page. You can go there now to read more about the benefits of organic vitamin C for radiant skin.

Until next month.......keep exercising your mind, body, and face. Stay healthy and strong.

    Sincerely,

    Linda
