How To Prevent Oily Skin and Reduce Excess Oil on Your Face

Are you looking for tips to prevent oily skin? While this type of complexion seems to wrinkle less, it's still important to treat it properly. Follow these easy steps on treating oily skin problems.

Understanding how to prevent oily skin is important if your complexion is sallow, ruddy, greasy, or suffers from breakouts. Do you have enlarged pores or blackheads? Does your makeup disappear a few hours after applying it?

Then you probably know what a challenge it is finding the right products. It seems the more you wash it, the more greasy it gets! What is going on?

Unfortunately, in most cases, it's a bit of trial and error. Finding the right products to suit your skin, may take some time.

According to WebMD, your face wash is the most important tip in reducing excess oil. But choose wisely. Many cleansers designed for oily skin may be too harsh and strip too much sebum - causing more oil production (a situation known as reactive seborrhea.) Reactive seborrhea is where the glands go into overdrive to compensate for the loss of natural oils.

Does your cleanser make your face feel tight or dehydrated? If so, you're probably using the wrong one or one that's not right for your type. Some products actually cause the upper layers of the dermis to shrink - in order to restrict sebum flow and prevent oily skin......but this is not a solution to your problem.

Tips to Prevent Oily Skin

Normally, the sebaceous glands (oil glands) that are attached to the hair follicles secrete sebum which then travels up the follicle and spreads out, keeping the dermis moist and healthy and helps prevent dryness.

But when you produce too much sebum, the hair follicle gets blocked. This often results in more oil production and other issues such as clogged pores, blackheads, bacteria and eventually inflammation.

Eventually, if you don't treat or prevent oily skin, pus begins to form then pimples or acne. And without the necessary moisture, your face will look dehydrate, rough and patchy.

What's important for a healthy beautiful complexion? An even balance in oil production. This is key for an even smooth complexion and help prevent acne and other problems.

That's why a lot of topical products don't work - they can only address the problem after the fact which means they don't prevent oily skin, just treat the symptoms. Your cleanser should dissolve the excess sebum not strip it completely!

What To Do To Prevent Oily Skin?

Face Wash - Use a cleanser with salicylic acid. Why? Because salicylic acid is lipid soluble which means it can penetrate better and really help eliminate excess oil and unclog pores. Plus if you suffer from breakouts, it also helps reduce swelling and pimples.

Try to wash the face no more than twice a day and use warm water to help dissolve grease and unclog pores. While washing, use your finger tips to lightly massage and distribute the excess sebum. It's very important to wash your face well if you wear makeup or water proof sunscreen too.

Moisturizer - If you're under 30, you may not need a moisturizer. However, if you suffer from wrinkles or fine lines, using an antioxidant based moisturizer is important to prevent aging. But only apply it to the dry or wrinkled areas - like the crow's feet, cheeks, upper lips, and neck. Just remember, not using a moisturizer will not prevent oily skin! So if you have dry/wrinkled areas - do use a moisturizer - but sparingly.

Also, consider using honey as a hydrator if parts of the face are very dry and crinkly. Honey is a fantastic humectant (which means it hold moisture) and can help hydrate with zero oils :-) Apply honey to the dry areas a few times a week and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Then rinse off.

Beta Hydroxy Acid - In addition to an effective face wash, applying a beta hydroxy acid serum using a cotton ball, a few times a week can help keep oil under control. Just be careful not to irritate the skin. Test a small area first and try this if your face wash is not enough.

Clay Masks - Clay or mineral masks are wonderful to detoxify, reduce impurities, and unclog pores. Try to use a mineral rich clay facial a few times a week. It's also good as a spot treatment for breakouts. Some people apply a dot to a new pimple and let it sit overnight. This often helps dry it out before turning into a big, red spot.

Drugs/Vitamins - A few years ago, a popular way to treat an extremely oily or troubled complexion was to take acne medications like Accutane (isotretinoin). However, these medications has a long history of toxic side effects, so it's important that you weigh the pros and cons and discuss this with your dermatologist before going this route.

Vitamins B5 (pantothenic acid) and B2 have been known to help reduce excess oil production for some people. Some research even suggests that a deficiency of these vitamins could be why some people suffer from excess oil in the first place. Consider taking a good multi-vitamin with the complete B complex.

Natural Tricks and Tips - Reduce consumption of fried greasy foods. While it's not 100% proven that fried foods causes a greasy complexion, we know that diet is important for overall health.

Also, Face exercises can help distribute oil and improve circulation, while reducing fine lines and sagging muscles.......it's a win-win here :-)

So, here you have it. Some simple, natural and safe ways to prevent and reduce oily skin while preventing aging and wrinkles. Try these suggests and you’ll get an even balanced, clear, smooth complexion in no time.
